The building as constructed in 1979 did not require the installation of fire sprinklers for any reason (allowable area, occupancy group, etc.). At the time the building was constructed, each of the suites was provided with two exits, one directly to the exterior and one that travelled through a common lobby or corridor. The exits that travelled through the corridor were all originally constructed of aluminum storefront. In many cases the walls in which the storefront was installed and the walls between suites were not carried to the full height of the concrete floor and /or the roof assembly. Draft stops were not required due to construction type and size. As part of the repair of the building due to fire damage, it is the Owner's desire to maintain the aluminum storefront entrances as they originally intended to do so. Per section 705.5.1 exception 3 of the 2009 IEBC, fire rated doors are not required, but other openings into the corridor would be required to be rated. In lieu of providing fire protected openings in to the corridor, we are requesting the following design and methods of construction a. construct all corridor walls and demising walls as 1 -hour construction per GA File No WP 1206. b. Install fire sprinklers per IBC 903.3.1 throughout the entire building. These modifications meet the intent of the code by providing additional protection via the fire sprinkler system and reducing the passage of smoke between the individual tenants and the corridor system. By constructing one -hour walls and providing fire sprinklers we are exceeding the fire life- safety requirements of the 2009 IBC and exceeding the requirements of section 705.5.1 of the 2009 IEBC.
