Evergreen Road Residence Addition Dear Don: Engineering / Architectural / Planning / Environmental / Structural Services A Native American Business Enterprise November 11, 2005 A structural review of the referenced proposed addition was performed with respect to its structural adequacy. The structure has two obvious problems: 1. The abandoned septic tank will interfere with the new footing. 2. The new end wall has too many windows to be used as a shear falls. The septic tank can be used as footing to support the foundation wall if it is properly modified. It is my understanding that the tank was filled with an acceptable material within 16 inches of the top of the tank. This tank should be completely filled with concrete leaving no void. The tank can then be used to support the walls which are reinforced using #4 dowels @16" on center drilled and grouted into the top of the tank. The roof diaphragm can be made to carry lateral loads in place of the end wall. The new roof diaphragm should be 7/16" OSB board with 8d nails @ 6" at the panel edges and 8d nails at 12" at intermediate framing. The existing end wall should be extended up to the new roof with an OBS board nailed similar to the roof diaphragm. If you have any questions regarding this review, please call me.
