Mr. Valkenaar,
On October 2, 2013 we met at 4813 S. Gillis Way Ct. to evaluate the roof of the home that was
damaged by a fallen tree. For the purpose of this report the side of the home that faces Gillis Way
Ct. will be referenced as the west side.
We gained access to the attic space where we could see that two of the roof trusses on the west
side of the home were damaged by the fallen tree, see photographs 1 & 2. We did not see any
evidence of damage extending out past these two trusses, however, it is likely that the trusses on
either side received additional load as a result of the impact from the tree.
Based on our findings we recommend that you replace 4 trusses, the two damaged trusses and the
first truss on either side of the damaged area.
We recommend that new trusses utilize a raised bottom chord to allow room for installing the
trusses with minimal impact to the existing finishes and utilities.
We recommend that you attach the new truss to the existing truss using 10d nails at 8" o.c.
staggered. In the area where the top chord is missing on the northern truss we recommend that the
truss manufacturer orient the new truss web members such that they coincide with the existing
truss to allow for nailing.
Once these repairs have been made, the roof should perform as originally intended. If you have
any questions, please feel free to call.
Sincerely,
