• STORM DRAI"NAGE CALCULATZONS
General:• "Vista Trailer Park" is located wi.thin a portion
of rhe EaNEyNW,, Section 19, Town. 25 N., Rge. 44 E,W.M.
' Approximately nineteen (19) trailer sites are to be
developed on a S± acre site,
Drai.nage Basin: The attnched map shoc,is the drainage area
which was taken into consideration as contributing to
the storm runoff which would occur within the proposed
Trailer I'ark, Zt will be noted that the area was divided
into five (5) areas, A, B, C, D, and E, Because of the
type of development and the general area a S-year sL-orm
frequenc}► was chosen, Following are the calculations
and storm water quant-ities by area:
Area "A". Area . = 6.43 acres
Length = 1000 lin, ft. '
Ave. Slope = - 16.5%
Tirne of concentration was calculated to
be 25 inin.
, Using the Rational Method to determine •
runof f ;
Q = AIR
-Q = 6.43 x 0.15 x 0.96
Q' = 0.93 cfs = 450 g,p.m.
Since this runoff wii1 flow to point #1, as
shown on the attached map, which is a barrow
pit at the present time it will not contribute
_ substantially to the area under consideration.
Therefore, it was noC figured in the overall
. runoff.
.
i
I~ . . .
• Area "B": Area = 5.22 acres
Length = 840 lin, ft.
. , Ave. Slope = 17.5%
Time of concentration was calculated
to be 22 min.
Using the Rational Method:
Q = AIR
; Q = 5.22 x 0,15 x 1.08
Q = 0.85 cfs = 380 g.p.m.
Since this runoff will flow to point #2, as
showm on the attached map, i.t was assumed that
half would flow east into Area "E" and half
woul.d f low wes t into A'rea "D".
Area "C": Becausq of the slope of the topography.
: this area will not contribute substantially
to the area under consideration. Therefore, it was not figured-in the overall runoff.
Areas "D" &"E". The area to be developed caas ,
divi.ded into two parts; the west part being
Area "D" and the east part being Area "E".
In order to calculate the runoff for these two
Areas some adjustment was made to the Ct
coefficient and the "n" value in order to
determine the time of concentration. These
adjustments were based on 29% of the area•being
' paved or roof covered and 71°!o remaining
undeveloped.-
' The same percentage was applied to determine the
runoff factor (1) for use in the Rational Method
Formula.
. '
Following are the calculations for these two areas:
Axea "D": Area - 2.64 acres
Length = 600 lin. ft. (street)
' Ave. Slope = 5%
Time of concentration was calculated to
- be 17 rnin,
Q ~ AIR
Q - 2,64 x ,41 x 1.28
Q = 1,39 cfs = 623 g.p.m.
Area "E". Area - 2.06 acres
Length - 600 lin. ft, (street)
Ave, Slope = 5%
Time of concentrati.on same as "D"
above: 17 min.
Q = AIR -
Q = 2.06 x.41 x 1.28
2 = 1,08 cfs = 485 g.p.m.
Drywell Calculations: -
Soil information was taken from the Soil Conservation
Service Soil Survey, Spokane County, WashingCon.
This survey shows the area to be developed as being
marble, sandy loam; USDA texture classification,
- 0" Co 23" sandy loam, 23" to 60" coarse sand. The
survey also shows a permeability of greater than
10 in/hr. .
Permeability for this soil was calculated on the
,following equation for flow (Darcy's Law): _
Q = Ki.At
in which:
Q= quantity of flow in time +
K = coefficient of permeability
i = hydraulic gradient
A= cross-sectional area of flow
t= time during which flow takes place
K= 102 (Fig.'7, page 18-20, Handbook of Applied
Hydraulics)
i = 2 ft/ft -
A = 1 £t2 t = 1 day therefore:
Q~ 100x2x lxl .
' Q = 200 cu.ft./day/ft2 •
= 1500 gal/day/ft2 .
= 1.04 gal/min/ft2
- Assume a standard drywell to be 4 ft, in diameter with
, 2.ft, ot rock backfill around it and having a 7 ft.
depth. The surface area then calculated to be:
Area = a 42 x 7 + U 42
= 402 ft2
Therefore each drywell will handle the following •
flows:
' Q = 402 x 1.04
- = 418 g,p.m.
Conclusion:
Based on the above data a minimum o£ four drywells
will have to be located within the developed site
to handle the drainage. If £inal street grades for the development can not collect the drainage in four locations additional drycaells or catch basins
and drain pipe will have to be installed. ThYS is
a decision that will have to be made by the developer or designer prior to construction.
