The purpose of our evaluation was to assist you in designing reconstruction measures for the proposed retaining wall at the above referenced site in Spokane, Washington. Our scope of work consisted of geotechnical research, geotechnical analyses, and report preparation. This report has been prepared for the exclusive use of Elite Hardscapes & Water Systems for specific application to this project, in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering practice. We appreciate the opportunity to be of service on this project. If you have any questions or need additional information, please call us at (509) 534-9711 at your convenience. Sincerely, STI Northwest, Inc. Brian W. Binsfield, P.E Project G-:techh. al Engineer Paul T. Nels• , P.E. Page 1 1.0 Introduction 1.1 Project Description We understand that the proposed project consists of reconstructing a retaining wall, which has failed twice since its initial construction. We understand that wall heights in the failed portion will range from about 10 to15 feet. You indicated that the existing block would be used to reconstruct the wall. The block is called Jumbo Nursery Stone. 1.2 Purpose The purpose of this geotechnical evaluation was to assist Elite Hardscapes & Water Systems in design of the reconstruction of the failed portion of the retaining wall and in preparing plans and specifications for reconstruction. 1.3 Scope Our scope of services was discussed with Mr. Melvin Miller of Elite Hardscapes & Water Systems and summarized in our Confirmation of Authorization for Services letter dated December 17, 2003. The scope of services agreed upon consisted of the following: • A site visit to observe the area and to characterize the site soils; • Analysis of proposed wall and reinforcement geometry; and • Submitting this geotechnical engineering report containing a summary of our analyses and our recommendations for design and reconstruction. Our scope of services did not include surveying to establish grades or preparation of plans and specifications. We can provide these services, if desired. 2.0 Site Description 2.1 Site Conditions The site is located at 2207 Ridgemont Lane in Spokane Valley, Washington (see Figure 1). Geologic maps indicate that the soils in this area consist primarily of flood deposited sands and gravels and/or colluvial and residual soils derived from gneissic bedrock. The Soil Conservation Service (SCS) maps indicate the site soils consist of Bernhill (BaB and BfB) gravelly fine sandy loam and silt loam (see Figure 2). Our visual observation of the exposed soils at the site indicates that they are consistent with the soil types shown on the SCS map. 3.0 Analysis and Recommendations 3.1 Design Data and Analysis The wall will range in height from 10 to 15 feet. The area above the top wall will be relatively flat. We based our design on a maximum wall height of 15 feet. We designed a segmental retaining wall using Jumbo Nursery Stone block, supplied by White Block. The block used for the design provides an 8.3-degree setback from vertical. Our design used geogrid reinforcement having a minimum allowable tensile load of 1,011 pounds per foot (such as Raugrid 4/2-15). Elite Hardscapes&Water Systems STI Project No.S030177A Ridgemont Lane Retaining Wall Design December 23,2003 STI Northwest,Inc. Page 2 Based on our review of the geotechnical data, we have assumed that the retained soil mass and infill material will consist primarily of silty sand with gravel (Unified Soils Classification SM). We used the following strength parameters for design. Angle of Internal Cohesion, pounds Unit Weight, pounds Soil Type Friction, degrees per square foot per cubic foot Foundation 30 0 120 Retained 30 0 120 Infill 30 0 120 3.2 Design Section To assist us in our analysis and design, we used AB Walls 2000 3.7TM computer software. The wall heights we designed for ranged from 10 to 15 feet. For the wall system, our analysis indicates that geogrid reinforcement will be necessary to maintain stability. The recommended length of geogrid reinforcement will be a function of the wall height. The following table summarizes the minimum recommended geogrid reinforcement lengths. Wall Height, feet Minimum Recommended Geogrid Reinforcement Length (ft) Less than 10 6 10-13 8 13-15 10 These recommended minimum lengths include a safety factor of at least 1.5 against pullout. Attached are several cross sections showing the placement and length of geogrid required (see Figures 3 through 5). 3.3 Foundation Preparation We recommend that the lowest course of block be installed a minimum of one course below grade. This is recommended to provide the necessary bearing capacity for the wall foundation. The block should be placed on a level pad of either clean sand having less than five percent by weight passing a 200 sieve or crushed gravel. For a sand leveling pad, we recommend that it be a minimum of 12 inches thick and extend 6 inches out from the face of the wall and be a minimum of two feet wide. We recommend that the foundation soils be evaluated for their suitability when exposed during site grading. Unsuitable soils should be removed and replaced with a compacted fill. Fill placed below foundation elevation for the wall should consist of sand or sandy gravel and should be compacted to a minimum of 95 percent of the modified Proctor maximum dry density determined in accordance with ASTM Method of Test D 1557. Drain tile should be placed at the bottom of the excavation at a location just behind the wall to remove water from behind and below the wall. The existing soils should than be removed from within sufficient distance of the back of the wall to allow placement of the geogrid reinforcement Elite Hardscapes&Water Systems STI Project No.S030177A Ridgemont Lane Retaining Wall Design December 23,2003 STI Northwest,Inc. Page 3 and backfill. Drain tile should be placed at the back of the excavation for geogrid placement (see wall cross sections). 3.4 Backfill and Fill We recommend that fill placed within 12 inches of the back of the wall consist of a clean, free- draining sandy gravel or pea gravel having less than five percent by weight passing a 200 sieve. This is necessary to provide for positive drainage to the drain tile system and limit the potential for water to build up behind the wall. It is our opinion that the existing site soils are suitable for use as the infill behind the wall, provided it is properly moisture-conditioned for compaction and the largest material size is less than 3 inches in diameter. We recommend that the backfill be placed in thin lifts of about 6 to 8 inches. The backfill should be placed relatively level for placement of the geogrid reinforcement. We recommend that the backfill be compacted to a minimum of 92 percent of the modified Proctor maximum dry density. Hand operated compaction equipment should be used to limit the potential of overstressing the geogrid or imposing excessive lateral stresses on the wall. 4.0 General Recommendations 4.1 Use of Report This report is for the exclusive use of the addressee and the copied parties to use to design the proposed retaining wall and prepare construction documents. In the absence of our written approval, we make no representation and assume no responsibility to other parties regarding this report. The data, analyses and recommendations may not be appropriate for other structures or purposes. We recommend that parties contemplating other structures or purposes contact us. 4.2 Level of Care Services performed by the geotechnical engineers for this project have been conducted in a manner consistent with that level of care ordinarily exercised by members of the profession currently practicing in this area under similar budget and time restraints. No warranty, expressed or implied, is made. 4.3 Professional Certification I hereby certify that this report was prepared by me or under my direct supervision and that I am a duly registe a -ngi•-er under the laws of the State of Washington.
