Filing Category: DESIGN—Masonry (038) IMSI® INSULATED REINFORCED MASONRY WALL SYSTEM INSULATED MASONRY SYSTEMS, INC. 7234 EAST SHOEMAN LANE, SUITE 1 SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA 85251 STYRO MOLDERS CORPORATION 1100 GARDEN OF THE GODS ROAD COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO 80907 1. Subject: IMSI® Insulated Reinforced Masonry Wall System. II. Description: A. General: The IMSI Insulated Masonry Wall System consists of IMSI molded polystyrene inserts designed for use with hollow concrete masonry units that comply as Grade N units under U.B.C. Stand- ard No. 24-4. The masonry units are manufactured by concrete block manufacturers with dimensions as shown in Figure No. 1, Details Nos. 14 to 18. One or two curtains of IMSI inserts are installed in each masonry unit in the field. The IMSI inserts are expanded from polystyrene beads to a density of 1.0 pcf. The inserts have a maximum 25 flame -spread rating and a smoke -developed rating less than 450. See Figure No. 1, Details Nos. 19 and 20 for additional details of IMSI inserts. B. Installation: The masonry units are installed in a running -bond pattern with each face covered with IMSI® Structure/Coat, surface -bond- ing cement. Leveling courses are required at the first course above the foundation at each floor level, and through the height of a wall when a vertical difference greater than 1/2 inch in 10 feet occurs within one course. Leveling courses are set in a full bed of mortar. Detailed installa- tion requirements are in ASTM C 946, Practice for Construction of Dry - Stacked, Surface -Bonded Walls. A stack -bond pattern may be used for fully grouted walls. Grout must have a 28 day minimum compressive strength of 2,000 psi. All grout must be consolidated by vibrating. Wall construction must also comply with Section 2404 of_the code. Construc- tion quality must comply with Section 2405 of the code. Anchor bolts and wall anchors must be embedded in fully grouted bond beams without the foam plastic inserts. Representative installation details are in Figure No. 1. C. Design: Structures are designed as reinforced masonry in accor- dance with Sections 2403, 2405, 2406, 2411 and 2412 inclusive, of the Uniform Building Code with the following provisions: 1. Specified compressive strength, f'm, used in design must be between 1,500 psi and 2,000 psi. 2. Specified compressive strength, f'm, must be verified by prism tests described in Section 2405 (c) 1 of the code. 3. Lintel beam design width must be the block width minus the foam plastic insert thickness if used. Unreinforced masonry lintels must be g routed. 4. Allowable Stress Design Method: a. The maximum tensile stress in deformed bars is 20,000 psi. b. The nominal block width may be used as the value "t" in the allowable axial Fa equations. c. Allowable axial stress in reinforced walls is: Fa = 0.1 f'm [1—(/f/42031 (top horizontal cell grouted) Fa = 0.05 f'm [1—(04203] (top horizontal cell ungrouted) 5. Strength Design Method: a. Nominal axial load is: P„=0(0.8)[0.85F'm(Ae— As) +fyAs] Where: 0 = 0.24 Top cell grouted, 0.12 ungrouted Ae = Effective masonry area As = Effective cross-sectional area of reinforcement b. Nominal moment is: Mn=0Asfy(d—a/2) Where: 0 = 0.65 d = As fy/0.85 f'm b c. The maximum yield stress in deformed bars is 40,000 psi 6. Steel reinforcement must be centered in the grouted section. 7. Allowable in -plane shear stress of reinforced walls must be based on the reinforcing steel resisting all shear. 8. Anchor bolts are designed and installed according to Section 2406 (h) of the code and Figure No. 1, Details Nos. 2, 6, and 7. D. Special Inspection: Special Inspection is required according to Sec- tion 306 (a) for installations located in Seismic Zones Nos. 3 and 4. Unless design stresses are reduced according to Section 2406 (c) 1 of the code. special inspection is also required for installations located in Seismic Zones Nos. 1 and 2. The special inspector is responsible for verifying materials conforming with this report, plans and specifications, mortar preparation and use, masonry unit placement, anchor placement, rein- forcement placement, grout preparation and use, preparation and han- dling of prisms, and mortar and grout test samples preparation. E. Identification: Each shipping container of IMSI inserts has a label bearing the product name, date of manufacture, container number, evalu- ation report number, Class I flame -spread rating, smoke -developed rating and the quality control agency name (Underwriters Laboratories Inc., NERQA-403). Each unit has "IMSI" molded on the top. Concrete masonry units receiving the IMSI inserts are palletized and identified with delivery slips which bear the manufacturer's name and evaluation report number. Each unit is also identified by its unique shape indicated in Details Nos. 14 to 18, Figure No. 1. IMSI Structure/Coat surface -bonding cement is packaged in 50 -pound bags labelled with the manufacturer's name, net weight, product name. mixing and application instructions. III.
