THOROSEAL WATERPROOF COATING FOR CONCRETE

1. Subject: Thoroseal Waterproof Coating for Concrete and Masonry.
II. Description: General: Thoroseal is a cement -based material pack-
aged in dry powder form and used as a heavy-duty coating for masonry and
concrete. It is intended as a waterproofing or dampproofing material to
comply with Sections R-305 and R-306 of the 1983 One and Two Family
Dwelling Code, or Section 1315 of the 1981 Basic Building Code or
Section 1707 (d) of the 1982 Uniform Building Code.
Application: The Thoroseal may be trowel, brush or roller applied. The
surface to be coated must be clean, free of all defective materials and
foreign matter such as paint, dirt, oils, etc. Thc surface must be dampened
immediately ahead of application. The Thoroseal is mixed with clean water
and applied in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Thoroseal
may also be mixed with Acryl 60. The ambient temperature must be 40°C
or aboheSY fige-of3Widnation an65hould-rot be applied ii [he temperature
is expected to fall below 40°F. within 24 hours.
Identification: All products arc identified by a label bearing the product
name and the manufacturer's name and address.

I. A 5000 -hour weatherometer test report by Ramtcch Laboratories
under Lab No. 3859-75 dated March 31, 1976.
2. Test reports by Pittsburg Testing Laboratory. which include:
(a) Lab No. 658536-A dated August 29, 1967. and conducted in
accordance with Army CE Specification TT -P-0035. which

wind -driven rain, accelerated weathering. and hardness.
(b) Lab No. 477416 dated March 30, 1956, which covers sand -
abrasion tests in accordance with Federal Specification TT-
P -141B.
(c) Lab No. 687478 dated November 18. 1968, which covers
freeze -thaw tests conducted in accordance with Mississippi
State Highway Department Special Provision No. 1358, Sec-
tion 401-200.
(d) Lab No. 685580 dated November 12, 1968. Report of 500 -
hour weatherometer exposure.
3. Report by Icelandic Building Research Institute under Report No.
H73/501 dated January 14, 1974, which covers water -resistance
material on concrete block walls.
4. Manufacturer's data, including installation instructions. The trans-
lation from German to English on test results of material for resis-
tance to frost, sudden temperature changes. water pressure, diffu-
sion and adhesion to concrete.
Findings
IV. Findings: The National Research Board finds that the Thoroseal
is an alternate material of construction to the requirements of the 1981
Basic Building Code and 1983 Supplement, the 1982 Uniform Building
Code, and the 1983 One and Two Family Dwelling Code, subject to the
following condition:
1. The material is applied by applicators trained by the material
manufacturer.
This report is subject to re-examination in one year.
This report is limited to the specific product and data and test reports submitt
independent tests were performed by the National Research Board, and the Board s,
as to any finding or other matter in this report or as to any product covered
merchantability. This report is also subject to the limitations listed herein.
