RE: Concord Stove.
Dear Mr. Gramlow:
I have reviewed the following data regarding the above mentioned stove unit
manufactured by Dutch West India, aka IMEX.
( 1 ) Pittsburgh Testing Laboratory report, order No. SP-5372, dated February
18; 1980
(2) A letter from Allen W. Dudden, P.E. of Gas and Mechanical Laboratories,
Inc. , Los Angeles, California addressed to Claude Myrick of the King
County Building Department. This letter is dated December 2 ! , 1979.
(3) International Conference of Building Officials, Research Committee
Report No. 1707. This report was prepared regarding several stoves
produced by Washington State Works located in Everett, Washington. ,
The Pittsburgh Testing Laboratory report describes a four hour test conducted
with the Concord stove. In this test, the stove was located 18 inches from a wall .
The maximum temperature reached during this test was 87° at a point directly behind
the stove.
The Gas and Mechanical Laboratory's letter cites a physical comparison between
the Concord and two other units that are listed by the International Conference of
Building Officials. These listed units are the Crest stove, manufactured by
Washington Stove Works, and the Scandia stove, manufactured by Franklin Cast Products.
This letter states: "Since two manufacturers have submitted almost identical units
to ICBO, which were tested by two different laboratories, it may be assumed that a
third copy could also comply. However, we have not yet tested the unit and have not
determined that the Concord complies with the intent of the standard."
The International Conference of Building Officials Report No. 1707 allows clear-
ances for the Crest model of 54 inches on the left side, 35 inches on the right side
and 18 inches on the back. It also specifies a minimum dimension of 36 inches from the
rear of the collar in a corner installation. All of these dimensions are room
combustible surfaces.

Based on the above mentioned data, we will allow installation of the Concord
stove in Spokane County using the distances specified for the Crest stove specified
in ICBO Report No. 1707. eG
We are assuming that the manufacturers of the Concord are pursuing obtaining
their own ICBO approval and are, therefore, limiting the duration of this approval
to January 1 , 1981 or the date of an ICBO Research Report approval on this unit,
whichever comes first.
Should you have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to
contact me at 456-3675.
Sincerely,
&Attu.t'v.„444.•
