SUBJECT: Geotechnical Reconnaissance
At your request, we have visited the site with you to examine geotechnical
conditions in the exposed foundation excavations.
The subdivision comprises 12 lots on the north side of 14th Avenue. At this
time, 5 lots are under construction, and the remainder are intended for later
construction. For the most part, the houses are intended to be constructed
above-grade with crawl spaces. However, one lot (Lot # 4509) will be 4
levels with a partial basement to 4' or 5' .
The lots are situated on the north side of 14th Avenue between Carnahan and
Havana, in what appears to be a backfilled aggregate pit.
It appears that the original pit excavation may have been quite deep, and
extended from the north towards 14th Avenue which was probably used as a haul
road. Much of that has been backfilled to yield level appearing lots. The
open excavations showed what appears to be a clear distinction between native
soil and fill, both of which comprise granular basalt fragments with varying
a...amounts of fines. For the most part, the materials encountered are too
coarse to allow testing of compaction.
For the most part, in this area such fills are seldom adequately compacted,
and generally have the potential to collapse about 10% of their height upon
saturation. In addition, such fills may contain domestic refuse, trash, and
yard waste, all of which can seriously complicate foundation problems.
Consequently, we do not recommend supporting the structures on the old fill.

It is recommended that the fill be removed, and that footings be placed on
native, undisturbed soil beneath the old fills. To this end, one of our
technicians was on site during further excavations to verify that native
soils were indeed encountered at excavation levels. The daily technician
reports follow:

Five (5) lots were examined on 14th Avenue. The addresses
were 4407, 4501, 4505, 4507 and 4509. The purpose of this
visit was to examine the suitability of the soils that are
intended to underlie the footings. The above lots proved to
have some questionable fill so we will return at a later date
when a backhoe is available to examine the underlying soils.
Tuesday, October 4, 1994 Technician: Larry Ashe
Weather: Clear & Warm 8 hrs portal-to-portal
The lots examined were 4407, 4501, 4505, 4507, and 4509 on
East 14th Avenue. Each lot was explored with a Komatsu 300,
to a rock grade which was completely resistant to this size
machine. Where fill was encountered, the material was removed
down to what appeared to be original soil consisting of very
high rock percentage (75%+). This removal was done in the
entire building area for the above lots. The extent of
removal varied from 6" to 2' . The east wall of the east
foundation trench at 4509 has automobile parts exposed but
footing grade is rock. This will be addressed when excavation
starts to the east.

Woodland Terrace Project Number E94249

At 4501 E. 14th Avenue, very dark, organic-laden, very wet,
very soft sandy silt was encountered at the northeast corner
of the proposed house location. Upon excavation of this
material, it was discovered to underlie down to 21' deep with
an average of 10' wide and 25' long at the top and 15' long at
the bottom. This pocket was cleaned out, with the Komatsu
300, to what appeared to be solid rock.
It was recommended that the resulting excavation be backfilled
with clean 111" x #4 rounded rock, which is essentially self-
compacting, and that the rock be thoroughly enveloped in
filter fabric to protect it from subterranean erosion. In
addition, it was recommended that the drain rock be vented to
the atmosphere in case radon or other toxic gasses develop.
This was done in our presence, utilizing an approximate rock
volume of 110 c.y.
This Report presents our professional opinion based upon site visits,
observations, and discussions with the developer. Necessarily, more
definitive data could be developed with a more rigorous program of drilling
and testing, which could develop bearing capacities, predict settlements, and
generate other geotechnical design factors. While this Report does not
constitute a geotechnical investigation conducted to the standards of the
