This applies only to Lowrise R-1 and R-3 occupancies. This requirement is part of the indoor air quality (IAQ) requirements and is intended to facilitate radon mitigation in the event high levels of radon gas are later found in the structure. Current state-of-the-art in radon mitigation strategies has shown that pressurizing or depressurizing this layer of gravel can be an effective means of control- ling radon levels in a building. To facilitate air movement in the gravel bed, the gravel should be generally uniform in size in order to form a high void ratio and large enough to provide a capilarity break. The following gravel specifi- cations have been accepted by Spokane County and City building departments as meeting the intent of the NWEC. These specifications provide size uniformity and eliminate substantial quantities of small material that reduce the void ratio and thereby do not allow sufficient communication of air through the gravel base for uniform sub slab pressurization or depressurization. These specifications were developed with input from local gravel suppliers in September of 1988. I • These specifications address Section 502.1.7.2 of the NWEC. The contractor may choose any one of the following 3 specifications: 1. Must meet ASTM Standard C33, "Standard Specifications for Concrete Aggregates' and shall be of Size Number 67 or larger as listed in TABLE 2, Grading Requirements for Coarse Aggregates; or, 2. Must meet Department of Transportation (DOT) specifications equivalent to Number 1 above; or, 3. Is screened , washed, free of deleterious substances and uniform in size, with 10O% of the gravel passing a 1" sieve and• less than 2%of the gravel passing a #4 sieve. Sieve characteristics shall conform to those acceptable under ASTM C33. NOTE: The Building Official may require written certification that the installed gravel meets the above specifications or may take a sample to be analyzed to determine conformance to these specifications. NOTE: Liability may be encountered for failing to meet these specifications. Several cases of liability associated with a radon hazard are currently being investigated. Use or acceptance of unapproved methods may pose unkown liability . Care should be taken to insure that these requirements are met.
