ALLWESTMaterials Testing Geotechnical Engineering Testing & Engineering Environmental Services May 29, 2012 Project No. 212-070G F >_ZOIZ— 00["7 Project _ RECEIVED Mr. Ryan Yeoman Rock Placing Company JUN 2 6 2012 14115 East Trent Avenue Spokane Valley, WA 99216 CSV PERMIT CENTER SUB # i REV. # Re: Geotechnical Engineering Evaluation Proposed Boulder Retaining Walls 5316 East 16th Avenue Spokane, Washington Dear Mr. Yeoman: ALLWEST Testing & Engineering (ALLWEST) has completed the geotechnical engineering evaluation for the proposed boulder retaining wall at the above-referenced site in Spokane, Washington. The purpose of our services was to formulate recommendations for design to assist you in preparation of plans and specifications for construction. This report summarizes the results of our analysis, opinions, and recommendations. PROJECT DESCRIPTION We understand that the proposed retaining walls will consist of terraced boulder gravity walls having two terraces retaining the native soils and/or structural fill. The minimum distance between the walls will be 10 feet. We understand that the exposed wall height for each individual wall will range up to approximately 5 feet at the highest point. The ground surface above each wall will be relatively flat. The ground surface below the lower wall will range from relatively flat to a maximum of 4:1 (horizontal to vertical). 690 W. At the time of our visit, excavation into the slope had not been made. The exposed soils on the slope consisted of silty sands with some gravel. Granitic bedrock was exposed in several areas. GENERAL SOIL CONDITIONS Based on our research of the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) soil maps, the on-site soils have been mapped as Spokane very rocky complex (StC, see Figure 2). The Spokane soils are described as a moderately shallow, well drained soil that formed in weathered granite or glacial till overlying granite bedrock. Based on observations made during the site visit, the soils at the site appear to be consistent with the NRCS data. ANALYSIS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Design Data We understand that the proposed retaining walls will consist of terraced boulder gravity walls having two terraces retaining the native soils and/or structural fill. We understand that the exposed wall height for each individual wall will range up to approximately 5 feet at the highest point. The ground surface above each wall will be relatively flat. The ground surface below the lower wall will range from relatively flat to a maximum of 4:1 (horizontal to vertical). We analyzed a boulder retaining wall section having a maximum exposed height of 5 feet. We anticipate that on-site soils or granular fill will be used to backfill the walls. We analyzed the retaining walls using boulders having general dimensions ranging from four-man rock at the wall bases to two- or three-man rock at the tops of the walls. We used a 14-degree (1:4 horizontal to vertical) batter from vertical for analysis. Assuming the soil types as encountered during our site visit, we used the following strength parameters for design: Unit Weight, Soil Type Angle of Internal Cohesion, pounds I pounds per cubic Friction, degrees per square foot foot Foundation 30 0 125 Retained 30 0 125 Infill 1 __- 30 0 125 Materials Testing ALLWEST Geotechnical Engineering Testing & Engineering Environmental Services Ge' -hnical Engineering Evaluation „posed Boulder Retaining Walls 5316 East 16th Avenue Spokane,Washington Project No.212-070G Page 3 Stability Analysis Using the previously mentioned strength parameters, we performed a global stability analysis of the slope using Bishop's method of slices to calculate the minimum factor of safety. The calculations were performed using XSTABL°software on a personal computer. The software is based on a computer program developed for the Federal Highway Administration by Purdue University. For a two-terraced wall with 5-foot maximum exposed wall heights with a relatively flat ground surface above the upper wall and a 4:1 (horizontal to vertical) slope below the lower wall, the factor of safety we calculated was 1.522 (see Figure 3). For stability, a minimum factor of safety of 1.5 is typically considered to be adequate. Based on this analysis, it is our opinion that the slope will be stable after construction of the walls. Design Sections To assist us in our analysis and design, we evaluated the wall sections with SRWaIITM (version 3.22) computer software, which was created by the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) for analyzing segmental retaining walls. We analyzed sections for exposed wall heights up to 5 feet and evaluated them under static loading conditions. Based on our analysis, we recommend installation of four-man rock at the base of the walls. Foundation Preparation We recommend that the lowest course of boulders be installed a minimum depth of 1 foot below grade as measured at the face of the walls. This embedment depth is recommended to provide the necessary bearing capacity for the wall foundations, provide for adequate global stability, and to resist sliding along the wall bases. The boulders should be placed on a level pad of compacted crushed gravel, sandy gravel, or quarry spalls. We recommend that the leveling pad be a minimum of 6 inches thick, extend 6 inches out from the face of the wall, and be a minimum of 4 to 6 feet wide depending on the size of the lowest course of boulders. We recommend that the crushed gravel, sandy gravel, or quarry spall leveling pad be placed in a loose lift of 6 to 8 inches and be compacted to a firm and unyielding condition. Topsoil extending to depths beyond excavation for the leveling pad should be completely removed before placement of structural fill. Where bedrock is present, the embedment depth and/or thickness of the gravel leveling pad could be reduced or eliminated provided that the bedrock surface is shaped to slope back into the retained slope. Materials Testing ALLWEST Geotechnical Engineering Testing & Engineering Environmental Services Ge -Mica! Engineering Evaluation Sosed Boulder Retaining Walls 5316 East 16th Avenue Spokane,Washington Project No.212-070G Page 4 Backfill and Fill We recommend that fill placed within 12 inches of the backs of the walls consist of a permeable, free-draining material such as quarry spalls or sandy gravel having less than 5 percent by weight passing a 200 sieve. This permeable fill is necessary to reduce the potential for water to build up behind the walls. We recommend placing a non-woven, water-permeable geotextile separator fabric behind the free-draining aggregate to reduce the potential for migration of native and fill soils through the drainage aggregate and the wall faces. Retaining Wall Drainage Draintile should be placed at a location just behind the lowest course of boulders behind each wall to remove water from behind the walls. The draintile should outlet at the lowest point of the walls down-gradient of the toe of the lower wall. Additional Services Recommended We recommend that ALLWEST Testing & Engineering be retained to provide construction observations to verify the soil and geologic conditions and that the report recommendations are incorporated into the actual construction. If we are not retained to provide the recommended construction observation services, we cannot be responsible for soil engineering related construction errors or omissions, nor can we provide any opinions regarding conformance of the construction to the recommendations contained in this report. REPORT LIMITATIONS This report has been prepared to assist in the design and construction of the proposed boulder retaining walls at 5316 East 16th Avenue in Spokane, Washington. Our services consist of professional opinions and conclusions made in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering principles and practices at the time of this report in this local area.
