SITE OBSERVATIONS AND SOIL BEARING CAPACITY RECOMMENDATIONS;
HOUSE SITE, 11704 E. 20th AVENUE, SPOKANE, WASHINGTON
This letter presents results of visual observations and limited geotechnical engineering
recommendations for a residential building to be located at 11704 E. 20th Avenue in
Spokane, Washington. Mr. Arne Bye, the property owner, plans to relocate an existing
house to the above site.
At the request of Mr. Bye, we made 5 site visits between October 25 and November 15,
1996 to observe site soil conditions and earthwork associated with the new foundations.
Preliminary observations and recommendations were summarized in our memorandum
dated November 6, 1996. See attachment.
Based on observations and hand probing during our site visits, we believe that the
subgrade for the new foundations has been adequately prepared. In our opinion,
foundation elements bearing in medium dense to dense proof compacted native sand and
gravel or in compacted Structural Fill extending to native soil, such as appear to be
present below proposed footing locations at this site, could be sized for a presumptive
soil bearing pressure of 2,500 psf. This value would not apply to foundations bearing in
loose, organic, silty or uncornpacted fill soils.
In addition, we recommend that below grade walls be designed to resist the lateral earth
pressures resulting from the soil backfill as well as any surcharges that may be present.
Based on our observations, we recommend that retaining walls be designed using a
presumptive active earth pressure of 35H psf where H is the depth of soil being retained
in feet. This recommendation assumes that the wall backfill is medium dense sand and

gravel or compacted granular Structural Fill and that walls are fully drained, so that
there is no additional hydrostatic pressure.
In our opinion, the passive earth pressure from compacted backfill against the sides of
buried footings and walls could be estimated using a presumptive passive earth pressure
of 300H psf, where H is the depth below the adjacent grade in feet. This
recommendation assumes that the backfill is medium dense to dense sand and gravel or
granular compacted Structural Fill extending beyond the outside edge of the footing a
minimum of 2 times the footing embedment depth.
For sliding resistance at the base of footings, we recommend using a coefficient of
friction of 0.35 between mass concrete and native sand and gravel or compacted
Structural Fill.
The recommendations in this letter are based solely on visual observations of conditions
noted at the time of our site visits. No soil samples were taken, no explorations were
conducted and no laboratory testing was performed. The recommendations made in this
letter are based on experience and engineering judgement. No warranty, either
expressed or implied, is made.
We hope that the information in this letter is sufficient for your needs at this time. If
you have any questions, please let us know.
Sincerely,

SUBJECT : Earthwork and Subgrade Observations and Recommendations
This memorandum reports preliminary observations and recommendations for earthwork
associated with foundation construction for a new residence to be located at 11704 E.
20th Avenue in Spokane Washington. We understand that Mr. Gil Miltenberger, the
property owner, plans to relocate an existing house to the above property. Mr. Arne Bye
is the earthwork Contractor. At the request of Mr. Miltenberger and Mr. Bye we made
site visits to observe soil conditions on October 25, 30 and November 5, 1996.
The property slopes down from 20th Avenue and is partially covered with fill soil. See
attached sketch. We understand that new footings for the house are required to extend
to native soil.
The earthwork Contractor has excavated for footings approximately as shown on the
attached sketch. Areas where footings are proposed appear to extend to native sandy
gravel. Overlying fill soil consists of mixed sand, gravel and cobbles.
We recommend that new footings bear on proof compacted native sandy gravel or on
compacted Structural Fill extending to native sandy gravel. We recommend that any
loose or organic soil, stumps or roots larger than about 2 inches in diameter below
foundation areas be removed and replaced with compacted Structural Fill. A minimum of
3 ft. of embedment below adjacent grade should be provided for frost protection of
exterior foundations. In addition we recommend that temporary cut slopes and
foundation excavations be covered during wet weather to prevent erosion.
Foundation subgrade preparation should include thorough proof compaction prior to
footing placement. Subgrade and bcarin9 conditions for footings should bo evaluated by
an experienced geotechnical engineer or engineering technician just prior to placement of
concrete to confirm that the subgrade is suitable for bearing and that all loose materials
have been removed.
