Dear Mr. Bivens:
We have completed the footing excavation observation and evaluation for the proposed
house located at the above-referenced site in Spokane County, Washington. This
report summarizes the results of our field observations, evaluation, and
recommendations.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The project is located at 11724 East 20th Avenue in Spokane County, Washington. You
indicated that the proposed house will be a one-story structure with a lower level which
daylights on the south side. The lower level will consist of a suspended floor slab
supported on spread footings. We understand that Spokane County is concerned about
the potential for fill to be present in the north footing trench of the lower level.
FIELD OBSERVATIONS
The footing excavation was observed by a geotechnical engineer on February 3, 2003.
Observation of the excavation sidewall indicated that the footing excavation extended
through about 2 to 6 feet of existing fill. The fill consisted primarily of poorly graded
sand (SP) overlying a 6-inch to 2-foot layer of silty gravel with sand (GM). A 2 to 4-inch
layer of buried topsoil was present below the fill. The footing subgrade consisted of
native poorly graded sand with silt (SP-SM).
In order to evaluate the subgrade soils, we probed the soils with a hand auger. The
hand auger consists of a 1 1/2-inch diameter auger. Soil classifications are based on the
cuttings brought to the surface. Relative consistency of the soils is estimated based on
the turning resistance of the soils. Based on the resistance to probing, we judged the
sands to be dense to very dense.

OPINIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the results of our visual observations and the hand auger probes performed, it
is our opinion that the sands encountered at and below the footing subgrade are
suitable for support of the anticipated footing loads. We recommend that any additional
footing excavations extend below the fill and/or buried topsoil.
REMARKS
Services performed by the geotechnical engineers for this project have been conducted
in a manner consistent with that level of care ordinarily exercised by members of the
profession currently practicing in this area under similar budget and time restraints. No
warranty, expressed or implied, is made. The content of this report and supporting
documents are for the exclusive use of addressee.
