I have been asked by the Spokane County Department of Building and Safety to remove
my business sign from my front yard. I was not aware you were not aloud to place a
sign in your own yard. The reason I didn't think there was any harm. Is because of

Dear Ms. Winslow:
With regards to our conversations of April 1, 1982, this office has received
reports concerning a "Ceramics and Greenware" sign on your property, located
at N. 311 Evergreen Road, Spokane County, parcel number 15544-1306.
A recent visual inspection by our field inspector indicates that this sign
is not in compliance with zoning ordinance requirements.
Though general commercial uses are prohibited in the Agricultural Zone, in
which your property is located, Home Occupations are permitted, provided
they are in compliance with the enclosed criteria. Note that subsection(d)
stipulates that, "...Signs identifying a home occupation shall be limited
in size to a maximum of two square feet, be unlighted, and be placed flat
against the building housing the home occupation."
Additionally, Section 4.17.120(b) of the Spokane County Zoning Ordinance
stipulates that, "...A sign identifying a kindergarten, nursery school or
home occupation is permitted (in an Agricultural Zone) provided that such
sign is limited in size to a maximum of two (2) square feet, unlighted,
and placed flat against the building housing the described use."
As an alternative to bringing your sign into compliance with ordinance re-
quirements, you can apply for a waiver of violation which, if granted, might
allow you to keep your sign at its present location and size. Please contact
the Spokane County Planning Department at 456-2205, for further information
regarding this waiver of violation.

We are of the opinion that a period of 30 days, beginning with your receipt
of this letter, should be sufficient time for you to either bring your sign
into compliance with the Spokane County Zoning Ordinance, or to contact the
Spokane County Planning Department and take the necessary steps as required
by that department, in a timely fashion, with regards to applying for a
waiver of violation or other options as that department might indicate are
available to you to rectify this situation, such as a rezone or a variance.
Do not hesitate to act upon this important matter, since a violation of the
Spokane County Zoning Ordinance is a criminal offense and does carry a penalty.
I am sure it is important to you, as it is to me, that we resolve this situation
quickly.
