INSTALLATION Duro-Last Roofing, Inc. provides de- tailed application instructions and training for roofing contractors and consulting services to architects, en- gineers, and specifiers. The following are general instructions for installing the Duro-Last system. Deck Surface Preparation: The sub- strate on which Duro-Last membrane is to be applied must be clean, smooth, free of sharp edges, loose debris and standing water. Gravel should be lev- eled. All surface preparations must be done in strict accordance with the Duro-Last application specifications. Insulation: Insulation must be laid on the deck and cut neatly around all penetrations. It must then be mechan- ically attached with approved fasten- ers according to the Duro-Last specifications. Do not lay more insu- lation than can be covered in the same day. Stagger the insulation boards 50% from row to row. Placement: lasing the roof layout di- agram, select the proper marked and rolled pre -manufactured sheet of Duro-Last membrane. Orient the membrane so the fastening tabs are perpendicular to the ribs or corruga- tions of steel deck or to the width or pre -stressed concrete "T" slabs. Secure the membrane to the roof deck through the fastening tab with ap- proved fasteners and plates, in accor- SPECo This Spec -Data sheet conforms to editorial style prescribed by The Construction Specifications Institute. The manufacturer is responsible for technical ac- curacy. )%1 dance with Duro-Last specifications. Unfold the sheet thus covering the fas- tening tab. Continue unfolding until the next fastening tab appears. Fasten this tab to the deck and repeat the above until the complete sheet is in- stalled. Penetrations: During the aforemen- tioned procedure, make cutouts in the membrane for protrusions. Fasten around cut outs with Duro-Last ap- proved fasteners. The skirt of the fac- tory fabricated accessories when welded to the deck membrane, will cover these cutouts. Breather Vents: One Duro-Last two- way breather vent must be installed for each 90 square meters (1000 sq. ft.). Duro-Last vents must be installed according to the Duro-Last Specifica- tions. Parapet Walls: Duro-Last custom fabricated parapet wall flashings are designed for each individual applica- tion. Secure through the fastening tab at the bottom of the wall using ap- proved fasteners and plates. The fac- tory dielectrically welded skirt will cover the fasteners when it is heat welded to the deck sheet. 6. The membrane is comprised of a vinyl chloride polymer - based polymer blend, which is reinforced with high strength, 14 x 18 pattern, weft inserted, polyester scrim. The membrane contains a combination of UV stabiliz- ers, UV absorbers, plasticizers, heat stabilizers, flame retardants, lubricants and biocides; and shall exhibit the minimum physical properties as listed in the INTRO- DUCTION section of this manual. 2. The .040 inch (1 mm.) thick Duro-Last single -ply roof membrane has a roll goods weight of 1/4 lb/sq ft. (1.3 Kg/m2) The prefabricated roof cover is supplied ei- ther folded or rolled in sections of up to 2500 square feet (232 sq. m.) in area and having no single linear dimension exceeding 100 feet (30.5 m.). 3. The prefabricated roof section is positioned on the deck to expose the first securement tab. The secure- ment tab is mechanically fastened to the deck with approved fasteners (see the table at the end of this section). The roof section is then unrolled and pulled taut (to remove any wrinkles) exposing the second securement tab. This process is repeated until the entire roof section has been mechanically attached to the deck including all securement tabs and all edges. (See detailed drawings 105 & 106 for greater clarifi- cation.) The next section of roofing membrane is then positioned to provide a minimum of five (5) inch (.13 m) overlap. The above processes are repeated to completely cover the decking or insulation and deck- ing. CHEMICAL RESISTANCE The Duro-Last Roofing membrane is compounded using the highest grade materials on the market today. Com- pounding in this manner gives our membrane resistance to many chemicals and natural occurrences. The following list is a sampling of materials we have seen in the roofing environment. Duro-Last is resistant to many more chemi- cals and will evaluate any chemicals not listed which may be present on a particular roof. If the chemicals you are involved with are not listed below please contact the Engineering Services Department at Duro-Last, Inc. BRIDGE VILLAGE APARTMENTS, SAULT STE. MARE, MICHIGAN THE WORLD'S BEST ROOF Duro-Last is unquestionably the pioneer and the world's largest manufacturer of custom fabricated roofing systems. As Duro-Last has grown into this position of distinction, several major industrial leaders, corporations and sources of specifications throughout our state and country have recognized us for our technological contributions to the roofing industry. Duro-Last has won the State of Michigan New Product Award in 1986. Governor Blanchard presented Duro-Last's Chairman of the Board and founder, John Burt, with Businessman -Of -The -Year Award in 1987. Also, in 1991, Mr. Burt was awarded Entrepreneur Of The Year. Duro-Last, Inc. has met or exceeded all of the major fire and wind code requirements as well as regional approvals necessary throughout the country. Duro-Last Inc. has been approved by Factory Mutual as a 1-60 and 1-90 roofing system and has passed wind uplift tests up to 150 psf. Duro-Last is listed by Underwriters Laboratory as a UL Class A material. The code agencies (BOCA, ICBO, SBCCI, etc.) have approved the Duro-Last membrane for use in their jurisdictions. Duro-Last participates major technical committees in the roofing industry as well as the American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM). All of this translates into a roofing system which by design can provide the consistent watertight integrity that building owners expect. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION The Duro-Last Membrane is classified as a CPA and is a proprietary thermo-plastic formulation consisting of resins and plasticizers, stabilizers, mildewsides, flame retardants and U.V. absorbents. This membrane is then laminated to a weft insertion knitted scrim that is produced by overstitching a non -woven web. The Duro-Last membrane is available in White, Tan or Gray. This pre -fabrication reduces field seaming and installation time. • CUSTOM PREFABRICATED FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL PROJECT Duro-Last, Inc. uses factory prefabrication to provide quality -assured products by producing 80 to 85% of the seaming in a controlled environment. This reduces the liability of all parties involved. The architect, specifier, consultant, contractor, building owner and the manufacturer have peace -of -mind knowing that only 15 to 20% of the seaming is done in the field. 07500/DUR BuyLine 2998 This prefabrication also reduces the material waste associated with roll goods systems. Each project is pre-engineered and designed to address the specific needs and provides the exact coverage necessary for each individual application. ACCESSORIES Duro-Last Roofing, Inc. produces a complete line of standard and custom fabricated accessories. These accessories are made from precisely the same membrane as the roofing sheets and are made in the factory, rather than labor intensive field fabrication on the roof. Standard accessories include: round pipe flashings, inside and outside corners, 2-way roof vents, roof drain liners, drip edges, gravel stops, termination bars and fascia with covers and clips. Custom accessories include: large round pipe flashings, parapet wall flashings, scuppers and flashings for all types of roof penetrations, i.e. HVAC units, skylights, chimneys, etc. The World's Best Roof •au! '1sn9-o1nO 3 • Duo -Last, Inc. 4 PREFABRICATION Duro-Last drastically reduces liabilities and the chance for error by eliminating 80 to 85% of field workmanship. The use of prefabrication significantly reduces the amount of field welding on a given project. The use of prefabricated flashings and accessories also decreases the necessary welding in the critical areas of the roofing system. This illustration uses two prefabricated panels to completely cover this 5000 square foot building. Note that the only field weld located in the center of the building is significantly less than the welding done in the factory. A roll goods system would require the contractor to make a seam at every location in the field and at flashings where the Duro-Last system has factory welds. Duro-Last provides many application details necessary to install the roofing system. Many more details and custom specifications are available upon request. Heat seaming and product formulation are combined to create a bond that is stronger than the individual products alone. Not unlike a finely engineered machine, the Duro-Last System components work together to provide long term, watertight performance. HEAT WELDED SYSTEM Heat (hot air) welding is used to bond all field seams. The welds can be made with either a hand held unit or a walker welder. This method eliminates the need for chemicals, torches and other unsafe non -manageable seaming systems. MAINTENANCE The Duro-Last System is non -curing to provide excellent welding ability for the entire life of the system. A patch, curb, stack or any other necessary alterations can easily be accomplished by heat welding the new Duro-Last membrane or accessory to the existing membrane. The Duro-Last System is continually watertight. INSTALLATION The Duro-Last system is quick and easy to install. Duro-Last can be installed right over most new or existing substrates. The need for costly tear -offs and disposal can be eliminated. Slip sheets are required in some reroofing applications. N„\,\ \\;\ "Why shouldn't I be able to make a leak -proof roof by performing all of the critical labor and waterproofing operations in the controlled indoor environment of a factory?" —John R. Burt, Duro-Last Chairman Saginaw, 1-800-Z t!W by shouldn't I be able to make a Teak -proof roof by perfor- ming all of the critical labor and waterproofing operations in the controlled indoor environment of a factory?" That question, which John R. Burt asked himself in 1978, launched his exploration of prefabrication as the cure for leaking roofs. At that time, he was the owner of Tri-City Vinyl, Inc., which manufactured swimming pool and chemical waste pond liners. He was also aware of the increasing concern in the building industry with the difficulty of keeping flat roofs — new and old — from leaking. Responding to the challenge of his own question, Burt has proved quite conclusively in the ensuing years that he can indeed make leak -proof roofs. He now heads one of the nation's leading single -ply roofing producers, Duro-Last Roofing, Inc., which has carved its considerable niche by producing roofs that don't leak. But moving from nowhere to front rank in eight years has involved more than just shifting certain traditional roofing operations from outdoors to inside the factory. "Creating a roof that wouldn't leak required a total system," says Burt. "New techniques, improved materials, and stronger discipline. So a new system is what we built," he adds with a note of pride, "and we call it the Duro-Last System." Generically, Duro-Last is a single -ply system, employing a durable, waterproof membrane for the exclusion of moisture and the elements. To make a single -ply roof leak proof, the following conditions must be met, according to Burt: • The membrane and all system components must be free of defects and resistant to all natural and environmental hazards. • The seams must be consistently and unques- tionably watertight. • Installation processes must preclude the possibility of leaks at any joint or termination. • Discipline must be built into the system and all its components. How does the Duro-Last system meet those con- ditions? Let's go down the list, point by point. IbURO- ...AST® Roofing, Inc. "Why shouldn't I be able to make a leak -proof roof by performing all of the critical labor and waterproofing operations in the controlled indoor environment of a factory?" —John R. Burt, Duro-Last Chairman Membrane and System Components The Duro-Last membrane is a high -tenacity, weft -inserted polyester fabric, coated with a specially formulated thermoplastic polymer. This is a proven material, continuously retested, that will not let water or moisture pass through; and furthermore, it will retain that property even after prolonged exposure to the elements and man -induced contaminants, abrasives, or abuse. Tables A and B list major industrial standards which the membrane meets and some 28 common elements or hazards which it resists. This same mem- brane is the basic material in the full range of Duro-Last flashings for roof penetrations, openings, perimeters and terminations. A unique feature of Burt's system is the factory prefabrication of these flashings, replacing the old practice of building them individually on Because prefabrication lowers installation time appreciably and greatly reduces the the rooftop. costs and risk of TABLE A The Duro-Last membrane material exhibits the following minimum physical properties: Property Specification Met Test Tear Strength, Lbs. The TABLE B Duro- Last's specially formulated polymer thermoplastic coating makes it more resistant to organic and inorganic chemical compounds than most other roofing mem- branes on the market. This coating has excel- lent resistance to the following substances: • Ammonium Hydroxide • Beer • Bleach • Butter • Citric Acid • Cooking Grease • Copper Sulfate • Detergent Solution • Exhaust Fumes • Fertilizer Solution • Fruit Juice • Furnace Residue • Hydrofluoric Acid • Hydrogen Peroxide • Lard • Milk • Muratic Acid (Cleaning Strength) • Phosphoric Acid • Salt Water • Sea Water • Sodium Hydroxide • Soldering Acid • Soldering Flux • Soy Bean Oil • Sulphuric Acid • Synthetic Brick & Masonry Cleaner Wm -Last system designed by Burt maximizes eam integrity in two ways: 1. It accomplishes the major share of the critical seam welding in the factory. 2. It utilizes a membrane that can be heat - welded. No adhesive or mastic is used; and a heat -welded seam is as strong and impregnable as the membrane itself. The conventional approach to seaming is to unroll ie material on the roof, line the strips up properly, nd weld them in place with heat guns. This is :asible, but the Duro-Last approach of doing as such of the seam welding as possible in the factory as major advantages: it maximizes factory -level uality control; it minimizes on -site labor and Istallation time; it drastically reduces the impact of 'eather and the elements on an in -process roofing peration; and it virtually eliminates waste. Premeasuring the job to Duro-Last specifications ermits large sections of the roof — up to 2,500 auare feet each — to be welded together in the ictory. On larger buildings, heat -gun welding on le will be needed to Dme degree; but on le average, 80 ercent of a Duro-Last )of is factory -seamed. he large welded sec - Nis are keyed for roper positioning on le roof, then rolled or Ided for delivery to ie site, ready for roof- lp placement and Lstening. 3 80.85% OF THE DURO-LAST SYSTEM IS CUSTOM PREFABRICATED Discipline — Factory The first element of the discipline Burt built into the Duro- Last system is introduced in the factory: making sure — absolutely certain — that the materials as they ave the factory are "as advertised"; that is, that le membrane and the seams plus the flashings, steners, and other accessories have no defects whatsoever; because a defect can mean a leak, sooner or later. To approach this space-age, zero -defects quality level, the Duro-Last system has fourteen mandatory in -plant inspections, starting with the incoming raw material and pur- chased components and finishing with the quality and specifications verification inspection at time of shipment. 4 Installation In our step-by-step progression through the Duro-Last system, we have thus far produced a roof covering of membrane which cannot leak, seams that are as durable and leak -proof as the membrane itself, and accessories of comparable strength and longevity. The next step in the Duro-Last system is a big Putting that factory -perfect roof onto the building without inducing any potential for leaks. Here the system introduces a new team: the Duro-Last dealer/contractors. Duro-Last dealer/contrac- tors are meticulously selected, comprehensively trained, and continously monitored. The company regards them as an elite corps of the most dependable roofing the business. Duro-Last supports them with detail installation specifications and on -site guidance, coupled with both factory and on -site training programs. one: contractors in 5 Discipline — On -Site It is S.O.P. to have a factory technician on site during every new contractor's first job, and thereafter whenever a need is indicated. At each project's completion, a factory quality assurance staff member inspects the job, specifies rework if standards have not been met, and, when the work is in total conformance, signs the customer's copy of the factory's warranty. For this protection, Duro-Last offers its customers the choice between a 15 and a 20-year warranty. Having built, installed, and guaranteed a leak- proof roof, Duro-Last Roofing, Inc., goes one step further: It maintains a $12 million insurance policy against any losses a commercial or industrial building owner might incur as a result of defects in Duro-Last material or workmanship. Why do you need an insurance policy on a leak -proof roof? John Burt has a ready answer: "We make our roofs leak proof; this policy helps make them skeptic proof also." John Burt founded Duro-Last Roofing, Inc., in Saginaw in 1981. In 1988, Duro-Last was on MICHIGAN BUSINESS magazine's list of the state's 100 fastest growing, privately owned businesses for the third successive year. Duro-Last has two manufacturing locations: one at its corporate headquarters at 525 Morley Drive in Saginaw, and the second, established in 1987, in Grants Pass, Oregon. The company currently employs 175 people at its two locations and has over 1,000 dealer/contractors in North America.
