PERIMETER INSULATION: All slab perimeters within 24 inches of the final exterior grade shall be insulated to at least R-10. Insulation shall be 24 inches in Length overall and installed in an approved manner. * INSULATION AND SEALING INSPECTION APPROVED PLANS are available on the job site. _ WINDOWS AND DOORS: All windows and doors shall be as specified on the approved plans. The rough opening around jambs, sills and headers shall be sealed to prevent air infiltration. These areas may be either caulked or foamed, but must be sealed airtight. SOLEPLATE CAULKED: Soleplates of walls shall be caulked or glued to the floor. PLUMBING AND ELECTRICAL PENETRATIONS: All holes in the buiding envelope shall be sealed to prevent air infiltration. Where electrical wiring passes horizontally through a wall stud, no sealing is required unless that stud penetrates the building "envelope." Electric boxes throughout the building shall either have the holes and edges sealed or be provided with plate gaskets. Rim joists, mudsills and plumbing stacks shall be sealed. WALL INSULATION: All wall cavities shall be filled completely to the required insulation value. Batts shall not be compressed. Batts must be cut to fit around wires, pipes and outlet boxes. Kraft or foil vapor retarders must be face -stapled. FLOOR INSULATION: Floor insulation shall be installed to the required R-value, and shall be supported in an approved manner with twine, wire, "Tyvek," netting, etc. Avoid compressing the insulation. CEILING INSULATION: If eave vents are used, approved baffles shall be in place to permit adequate ventilation through eave vents. Blown insulation may not be used if the ceiling slopes more than 2-1/2 in 12. DUCTS: Ducts shall be sealed at joints and corners with duct tape or sealant. Ducts outside of the conditioned space, except exhaust air ducts, shall be insulated to R-11. Exhaust air ducts shall extend to the exterior of the building. VAPOR RETARDERS: A vapor retarder is required on the warm side of insulation in walls, floors, and ceilings. Approved materials include: 6 miL. polyethylene, Kraft or foil paper face -stapled, exterior grade plywood and certain flooring materials. CRAWL SPACE: Screened ventilation openings shall be provided at a rate of not less than one square foot for each 300 square feet of under -floor area. * FINAL INSPECTION (ENERGY) APPROVED PLANS are available on the job site. MECHANICAL SYSTEMS: All mechanical systems will be checked for correct operation and labeling of controls. Heaters shall be sized as shown on the approved plans. Exhaust fans shall be properly located and shall be properly rated for size and noise. Exhaust ducts shall be provided with a tight -fitting backdraft damper. The whole house exhaust fan shall be controlled to operate automatically as well as manually. Make-up air intakes shall be properly located and sized. WEATHERSTRIPPING: Weatherstripping shall be aligned for proper seal on exterior doors, including doors into unheated spaces. Door threshold or sweep shall be properly adjusted. Attic hatches and interior crawlspace access hatches shall be weatherstripped and insulated. Windows shall be weatherstripped and locking mechanism checked for proper function. Electrical switch and outlet plates throughout the building shall be fitted with gaskets, unless the boxes were sealed prior to the insulation inspection. ATTICS: Insulation shall be of thickness specified by the manufacturer to comply with required R-values. PLUMBING: Hot water heaters shall meet the ASHRAE 90A-80 specifications. Showers shall be equipped with flow restrictors allowing a maximum flow of 2.75 gallons per minute per shower head. FIREPLACES / WOOD STOVES: Fireplaces and wood stoves shall be equipped with "tight -fitting" metal or glass doors. A combustion air intake shall be ducted directly into the firebox. The intake duct shall be at least six square inches in area and shall be equipped with a readily accessible, operable tight -fitting damper. CRAWL SPACES: A ground cover of 6 mil. black polyethylene or equal shall be installed on all crawl space floors. Joints shall be lapped at least 12 inches. INDOOR AIR QUALITY: During the final inspection of occupancies which are eligible for incentive payments, the energy code inspector will leave a pre -paid postcard, which offers a free radon monitor, and a backgrounder booklet from SPA about indoor air quality.
