Sprague Ave. Ste. 304 Spokane Valley, WA 99206 Re: Sullivan Rd. Br. #4508 Temp. Repairs, SVPW#11-031 Dear Steve: We have been discussing the possibility of installing asphaltic plug expansion joints at the north end and two interior joints of the Sullivan Road(south bound)bridge. For these joints we propose to install the D. S. Brown Matrix 502 system with minor modifications as follows: 1. For the two slide plate joints, which are presently about 1+"wide and 3/4"deep and seem likely to close nearly all the way in the summer,an alternative to backer rod may be required to keep hot asphalt out of the joint gap during joint installation. 2. In consultation with D. S. Brown we propose to utilize 1/8"thick, 8"wide grade 50 steel for the bridging plates (to maximize Matrix 502 thickness over the plates; 1A"A36 steel is more common) and blasting sand or some other locally available sand acceptable to the engineer for top dressing the Matrix 502. 3. Pricing includes heating the deck to a minimum of 40 degrees Fahrenheit in normal winter conditions, removing and replacing the temporary curbs along the west side of the roadway, installing the Matrix 502 joint system from barrier face to barrier face in the roadway, including supporting the north side of the bridging plates on a shoulder cut into existing asphalt paving(apparently about 9" thick) at the north bridge end joint. Our price to furnish and install the 3 joints as noted above (including saw-cutting and removal of existing asphalt paving)would be $6,200/each for a total of$18,600. This price is comprised of approximately 54%labor and equipment plus 36%materials and supplies. With this proposal we also request that contract time be extended 6 working days for the work and pre-heating. It should also be noted that current asphalt removal work indicates Matrix 502 joint thicknesses will be less than 2" in places and therefore cannot be warranted by D. S. Brown or N. Since the contractor will be using the asphaltic plug joint material (D.S Brown Matrix 502 system)to cover the bolt heads related to the girder strengthening, they thought it would be a good time to repair the joints before traffic gets restored back onto the bridge. The existing asphalt overlay at the expansion joints on the north end of the bridge and in the middle of the bridge (three total) are in poor shape and are need of constant repair.
