EXPANSION JOINTS SHALL LINE UP WITH REBAR AT 4' O.C. CONCRETE TRAFFIC ISLAND CURB N TS a SECTION 8 -101 TRAFFIC ISLANDS 8 -101.1 Description This work shall consist of constructing traffic islands or median curbs to line and detail as shown on the Plans or as directed by the Engineer. 8 -101.2 Materials Reinforced doweled curb shall be constructed with air - entrained concrete Class 4000 conforming to the requirements of Sections 6 -02 and 8 -04 and the plans. Island nosings shall be constructed of Class 4000 air - entrained cement concrete and in accordance with Section 6 -02 and with the plans. Exposed aggregate concrete shall be 6 sack commercial concrete or an alternate Engineer - approved mix provided that the coarse aggregate gradation shall be 100 percent minus 3/4- inch. If specified, precast traffic curb shall conform to the requirements of Section 8 -07. Traffic island fill, where shown on the plans, shall be a crushed surfacing top course meeting the requirements of Section 9- 03.9(3). 8 -101.3 Construction Requirements Section 8 -101.3 is supplemented with the following: In locations where a delineator is shown on the median, the contractor may place a 3" (inside) diameter PVC sleeve prior to pouring concrete to ensure the delineator can be installed without damaging the rebar. 8- 101.3(1) General The area between the curbs of the islands shall be backfilled with crushed surfacing top course and covered with 4 inches of exposed aggregate concrete. Crushed surfacing shall be thoroughly compacted. Two inch diameter holes shall be drilled through the existing pavement into the subgrade at the low points in the island or as directed by the Engineer to allow the moisture that may accumulate to drain away. The backfill inside the island shall be graded to effect a slope of 1 -inch per foot for the concrete surface, to facilitate drainage, and shall be at a level such that the surface of the exposed aggregate is even with the top of the curb. The surface of the concrete shall be both floated and trowelled. The aggregate shall be exposed by simultaneously brushing and flushing with water or by use of a retarder on the surface. Care shall be taken in exposing the aggregate in order that bond will be maintained with the particles. Depth of exposure shall be a maximum of 3/16 -inch. A sealant, Tri -Kote Concrete Treatment or approved substitute shall be placed on the finished surface prior to the acceptance of the work. The finished median curb and island shall conform to line, grade, and cross - section. The horizontal variance shall not be greater than 1/4 -inch when checked with a 10 -foot straight edge, nor greater than 1/8 -inch in a 5 -foot distance or less. The vertical variance shall not be 2012 St Preservation Project — Phase 1 CO 4 Specifications 2 greater than 1/4 -inch when checked against plan elevation. The cross - section dimension variance shall not be greater than 1/4 -inch. 8- 101.3(2) Special Considerations Restrictions for Clearance. Occasionally situations arise wherein the island curbs become so close together as to make it extremely difficult to form them separately. In order to accommodate this situation in a consistent manner, areas of the traffic island where the curbs are closer than 24- inches measured from outside face to outside face shall be formed monolithically of cement concrete, with NO exposed aggregate concrete used in the space between. Special Requirements for Cross Walks. When shown on the plans, traffic islands must accommodate pedestrian traffic. Consequently, special consideration must be made for the pedestrians' safe passage. Pedestrian ways may take the form of either a pass- through or a normal wheelchair ramp and sidewalk, as provided for below. 1. Pass - throughs shall be created by dividing a single traffic island as necessary to create two or more smaller traffic islands. The pass - throughs shall be a minimum of 6 -foot in width. The surface of the HMA or PCCP shall be finished in a manner that will allow water to drain out of and away from the pass- through. 2. For islands of sufficient size, curb ramps shall be used. A minimum 5 -foot length landing is required between ramps. The ramps shall be connected with 5 -foot wide City standard sidewalk with a broom finish. The sidewalk area shall be separated from the exposed aggregate island surfacing with expansion joints. All other sidewalk standards apply including lateral expansion and contraction joints. The Contractor may choose to construct the island surface in one phase, provided there is an expansion joint between the sidewalk portion of the surface and the exposed aggregate portion of the surface. The Contractor may elect to construct the island surface in two phases, in order to make it easier to achieve the required surface treatments. In this case, there will be no extra compensation made for constructing the surface in multiple phases. It shall be noted that utilization of the standard doweled island curb does not allow for ramp thickness where the plane of the ramp intersects the plane of the pavement. In order to address this, the Contractor shall chip or saw the pavement to a 4 -inch depth and remove the required amount of pavement as to allow for full thickness of the ramp concrete. The edge of the chipped area which coincides with the normal face of curb shall be vertical and neat in appearance, so that when the ramp concrete is poured against it, the resulting work will present a uniform line. In this case, the work to chip or saw and then remove the required portion of pavement shall be considered incidental to the work and there shall be no extra payment made. 2012 St Preservation Project — Phase 1 CO 4 Specifications 3 8 -101.4 Measurement "Concrete Traffic Island " will be per square yard as measured from face of curb. Curbs forming the exterior edge of Traffic Islands shall be included in square yard cost of "Concrete Traffic Island ". 8 -101.5 Payment Payment will be made in accordance with Section 1 -04.1 for each of the following bid items that are included in the proposal: "Concrete Traffic Island ", per square yard; shall be full payment for the tools, labor, equipment, and materials required or necessary to construct traffic island(s) in accordance with the Plans and Specifications. The work shall include cost to drill holes in the newly constructed pavement, furnish and install dowels, and place the Concrete Traffic Island to the width and length shown on the plans. 2012 St Preservation Project — Phase 1 CO 4 Specifications
